Epoxies have been used in industrial applications for many years, but now they have also started appearing in homes … starting in the garage.
Paint Chip Epoxy Floors
Quite common in Las Vegas, garage floors made of epoxy mixed with eye-catching paint chips make a subtle statement. The variety of epoxy colors and chip blends make it easy to find a combination that complements any home. The most popular of these finishes is the full broadcast of chips that completely covers the floor.
Metallic Epoxy Floors
Metallic epoxies came quietly onto the market years ago. As with all new technologies, the process and materials were cumbersome and expensive. Fortunately, as time has passed these high-quality products and application processes have become imminently more affordable. As a result, metallic epoxy floor coatings have blossomed into a vibrant new trend — popping up in residential and commercial properties as an exotic interior focal point.
Made of 100% solid epoxy with metallic pigments added, this self-leveling epoxy coating is designed to create a glossy and deep looking floor with a variety of different colors and visual effects. It can even create an arresting three-dimensional appearance that gives the illusion of craters, ripples, and swirling rivers of metallic-looking plasma. Not only do these floors look absolutely stunning, they also provide a high-performance coating that is designed to last for years. There are multiple color options and combinations available.

Special Note from Concrete Texturing’s Owner
“The recession has been hard on us all. However, I have had some extremely rewarding experiences during these hard times. There have been many times when a customer has called me just to see how I was doing. I have been overwhelmed with the number of referrals that we have received recently. Also, our existing customers have called us back to do additional work at their homes. I just completed a two-week period where I had 5 existing customers call me back to do additional work on their homes.
All these customers have had our product for at least two years. They see how it’s wearing and they are very happy with the work. Our existing customer base has been wonderful, enabling us to weather the storm in these difficult economic times. They have told their friends, associates and people moving in next door about us. Our referral business is the best it has ever been. I am so grateful for those loyal customers. Without these customers I would not be in business today.”

Create Superior Surfaces with Concrete
Concrete is a part of everyone’s décor, but who says that it has to be boring? The majority of homeowners settle with traditional styles of concrete that are – let’s be honest – redundant and dull. Many people don’t even realize that cement doesn’t have to be ugly and gray!
The truth is, concrete can be a form of art. Why not give your home a unique touch that will impress (and inform) the entire neighborhood? There are so many options available for livening up your concrete! Whether you’re a new homeowner designing an elegant landscaping plan, or a current one in desperate need of a surface revival, there’s a gorgeous solution for everyone.
This decorative concrete method takes design to a whole new level. With today’s versatile concrete overlays, it’s easy to give almost any area of the home, indoors or out, a complete face-lift. At a much lower cost than removal and replacement. Nothing gives your home immediate curb appeal like a decorative concrete driveway. Patterned concrete is made to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, wood, and more.
Of course, while your outdoor surfaces might be the first thing that comes to mind at the thought of concrete, gorgeous concrete overlay options can also work wonders on your interior. Stunning and unique, these methods of design are extremely practical for the home. Of all the surfaces available to a homeowner, concrete floors will provide the best value, durability and versatility.

Protect Your Investment
As pool season comes to a close, you may notice some wear and tear on your deck. There is no better time than now to get things back into shape and ready for a new year. Pool decks can take a beating in Las Vegas—intense sunlight, chemicals dripping on the surface, and calcium from the sprinklers deteriorating and discoloring the texture. An annual evaluation is essential to prolonging the life of your deck.
If it has been over five years since you have applied a protective color coat, there is probably discoloration and deterioration. If you want to prolong the life of your pool deck, maintenance is the key.
Minor Maintenance vs. Costly Repairs
Many homeowners put off deck maintenance because they are afraid of the cost. They assume that the entire surface has to be renewed or ground-off and completely resprayed. While this scenario is possible, it’s usually not the case. The best thing a homeowner can do is to apply a protective color coat (and sometimes a little texture) as soon as they start to detect wear. This protection drastically reduces the chances of peeling texture, and adds at least four years of life to your decking.
Spray on Comfort
Spray deck or pool deck textures are the most common surfaces used around pools in the greater Las Vegas area. Not only is spray deck resurfacing the most heat-resistant material, it is also incredibly economical, slip resistant and low-maintenance. If you’re worried about children or grandchildren running and slipping near the pool, this is for you. If your pool has stamped concrete and you’re tired of burning your feet because it is too hot to walk on, coat it with pool deck texture.
Although you might consider the transition slightly painful on the budget, the immediate enjoyment from walking on a cooler surface will ease your pain. Not to mention the reduced repair costs!
Want to spice things up a bit? Try giving your new surface a little flair with an accent color on the elevated spa or pool area. And, we can add an elegant border from 8 to 16 inches wide around the edge of the pool for additional eye candy.

Decorative Concrete Surfaces
Selecting a Concrete Look
We see decorative concrete everywhere: casinos, interior floors and surfaces (like counter tops), driveways, walkways, balconies, patios and pool decks. It adds so much to the look of a home or business; many areas don’t look finished without it.
You may be thinking of adding some to your own home. Well, there are lots of options out there, especially here in the Las Vegas valley. Since this is an investment in your home, you’ll want to make an informed decision.
Concrete surface options have multiplied exponentially over the last 10 years. Years ago, gray concrete was the standard. If you didn’t want standard gray concrete, you had to rip up the concrete and re-pour it. Thankfully, ripping up your concrete is no longer necessary, as there are limitless options to upgrade with texture, stains, and designs that go right over your existing concrete.
This means that instead of that boring gray concrete, you can enjoy the upscale look of classic stonework, tile or simply rich texture and color. These options have been tested extensively in various conditions for over 20 years, and when applied correctly and under the right conditions, have proved to be incredibly durable.
Refresh your Sealant
Sealant questions are common among Las Vegas homeowners–for good reason. The climate here is intense, and can be damaging to surfaces if they’re not adequately protected. No matter what your design preference, maintaining your new surface is key to enjoying it long-term. A properly applied seal coat can enhance the look and prolong the life of any decorative concrete surface — this includes stamped concrete, overlays, epoxy rock, stains, etc.
Decorative concrete must be maintained by periodically applying a fresh seal coat. Knowing when to reseal your surface depends on many lifestyle factors, as well as sun exposure and the type of sealant originally applied. I advise customers to pay attention to their surface when cleaning it. If water beads up on the surface, you still have a good seal coat. However, if water immediately penetrates the surface, it is time for resealing.
The dangers of not maintaining a fresh seal coat are significant, and include:
Fading color, and
Product deterioration (like bubbling, cracking and peeling)
What You Should Know About Sealants and Contractors
The challenges you face as a homeowner are knowing when you should reseal your decorative surface, and who should do it. This may not be as straightforward at it seems. I know a lot of contractors who steer clear of resealing someone else’s work, because there is just too much risk of failure. There are many sealants on the market today that are not compatible with each other, leading to the risk of bond failure.
Precautions must be taken before sealing your surface, such as sealing a test area first. However, even if that test area works, it does not assure the new sealant will bond or react over time with the existing surface. Your best option is to reseal with the same sealant brand. Consequently, you should ask any prospective contractor if he maintains his own product prior to hiring him. I also suggest getting the manufacturer name, number and local supplier and storing it in a safe place in case the contractor goes out of business.
Not all Sealants are Created Equal
If homeowners plan to reseal the surface themselves, I advise getting product from local specialty stores that service the industry rather than a hardware store. There is a big difference between commercial grade sealants and those you can pick up at the hardware store. You should also know what type of sealant is being applied to your surface up front. A good contractor will ask the customer their preference in sheen and should have an understanding of traffic and use of the surface.
There are two types of sealants: water based and solvent based. Solvent-based sealants are much stronger and more durable. They range in durability based on their composition and the percentage of solids in the sealant. For instance, sealant can be a solvent-based acrylic mixture or a solvent-based polyurethane mixture. The Polyurethane sealants tend to be more durable, shiny and stain-resistant than solvent acrylic sealants.
Pay attention to the percentage of solids in the sealant. The higher the solids content, the more durable the sealant. For example, a sealant with a 65% solids content will give you more protection than a sealant with a 25% solids content.
The sealant I recommend to my customers varies based on:
Use of the surface (driveway, patio, business, etc.), and
Pick Your Shine
If a homeowner doesn’t like a high-shine surface, I steer them away from polyurethanes unless we’re sealing a driveway. Polyurethanes are always a consideration for driveways, which are subject to car traffic and potential oil spills, as they clean up easier than solvent acrylic sealants. Since polyurethanes applied over an acrylic stain tend to be extremely glossy, we can decrease the high shine by staining the surface with a pigment rather than an acrylic stain. This allows the polyurethane to absorb into the texture, creating a semi-gloss surface.
Again, not all polyurethanes are created equal. There are single component urethanes and two-component systems that are mixed on site. The two-component systems tend to cure harder, making them more durable and resistant to stains caused by tires and oil. For high-traffic areas like driveways or commercial properties, a high-build, two-component polyurethane is recommended.
Knowledge is Power
By asking the proper questions, getting referrals, and looking at previous jobs, you can feel confident about the investment you’re making. Remember that keeping your decorative concrete properly sealed will enable you to enjoy your beautiful surfaces for years to come.
